Island (Human) Nature Human (Island) Nature: Photography by Cara Dolan and Heather Wasklewicz
october 10-19, opening FRIDAY 10/10 5-8PM
Cara Dolan:
This body of work reflects on the ways nature speaks to us, and asks: who is listening? Children, natural collaborators with the earth, meet it with intuition and curiosity, while adults often seek an illusion of control over it. These photographs move through seasons, tracing cycles of resistance, vulnerability, and renewal.
Working exclusively with 35mm film helps me accept that control is limited, and that surrender is essential for growth. Each image is born from a mix of intention and accident, and once the moment has passed, it’s gone. By the time the film scans arrive, the flowers have faded, the storm has passed, the season has shifted. There are no re-do's until time circles back.
I am very grateful to my friend and creative confidante, Heather, for inviting me to take on this uncomfortable and rewarding exercise together.
Heather Wasklewicz:
The work I’ve selected for this show centers on humans within their island environments. Captured through informal portrait sessions, these images were taken in moments when my subjects seemed to have shed self-awareness and entered a state of ease. As a result, the portraits carry a dream-like quality—evoking intimacy, stillness, and presence.
It’s an honor to share this space with film photographer, mother, fellow islander, and friend, Cara Dolan. Though our styles and processes differ, her work beautifully complements my darker, moodier aesthetic. Together, our images create a balanced dialogue between Human {Island} Nature.
10% of my photo sales will be donated to the Peaks Island Health Association, a 501c3 non-profit organization devoted to facilitating and supporting the delivery of health services on Peaks Island, both for island residents and visitors.

The gallery operates seasonally June-October each year. Each exhibition lasts about two weeks and the hours are Saturday and Sunday afternoons, 1-5:30 PM but midweek hours and private showings are also available via request or by chance.
The shows are by invitation, any interested parties are welcome to submit their ideas for showings, classes or gatherings of any kind.
The “business” model of the gallery is and always has been providing artists a space they can utilize without worry of being monetized and exploited. It’s sustained by myself, the artists I’ve invited to show there and the yearly fundraiser called the Spring Hop. The goal is to continue to offer the space at a very low cost to the artists so that they can retain ALL profits from their sales. This has always been the number one priority of the gallery: to assist deserving hard working artists by offering a generously supportive and affordable space.
This year the lineup is exceedingly diverse. Along with some returning favorites there will be exciting shows by locals who are not artists in a traditional sense, and our beloved pop-up yoga shala will return in August.
Thank you for your time and interest, see you soon!
